Integrating Quotations Lesson Plan

Opening discussion:
Instructor will lead a lecture/discussion with Integrating Quotations PowerPoint.  Instructor will have prepared many good examples and discussion question i.e. Why is this not a good use of a quotation? When do you most often see quotations in what you’re reading. Why is it important to cite your source correctly? (This is a good opportunity to talk about plagiarism again.)

Activity: Integrating Quotes from Magazines

Supplies:
magazines (appropriate)
scissors
glue-sticks
notebook paper

Procedure:

  1. Students will find and cut out five quotations from the magazines. (Must be actual quotations in quotation marks.)
  2. They will put all the quotes in a bag and then randomly pull out five.
  3. Students will paste their quotes evenly down the center of a sheet of notebook paper, leaving enough room to write around each one.
  4. Students will have 20 minutes to come up with sandwich sentences to go around their quotes.
  5. In groups of four, students will share their sentences and then come to a consensus of which ones they want to share with the class.
  6. The instructor will ask to hear the best supported quotes and possibly the most comical examples.

Final Thought: Students will have an opportunity to revise their sentences and turn them in for an easy quiz grade.
